Established professionals moving to Japan.

My wife and I are fairly established professionals with a home, 3 kids, and 2 dogs. We’ve been discussing the possibility of moving to Japan, however it seems like it might be impossible given our circumstances.

I have about 18 years of experience in IT/Security, 3 degrees (2 under/1 grad), and a few important certs (CISSP, etc – although I currently work more with AI). My wife has about 12 years of full stack dev experience and 2 degrees (1 under/1 grad). I speak N3 Japanese that I could probably ramp to N2 pretty quickly. My wife speaks very little. Right now we make the equivalent of 30M ¥ and 20M ¥ annually, which seems staggeringly high for Japan. We are debt free minus our home, cars, and student loans. Obviously we would sell the home and the cars, so our financial obligations would be minimal, however it seems like the pay cut would be eye-popping at best. Not to mention – what would be the upfront costs of relocating a family this size?

Seems like maybe an impossible goal. We also considered buying real estate and simply traveling there often, but is that even legal?

Curious if anyone in a similar situation has made it happen, or considered it, or whatever.

Thanks in advance for any info!
