I was trying to explain this to a friend, but her native language is French, and she doesn't understand the last part, with the float and sparks. Do you know what festival I was attending, so I can look up video for her to see?
I don't think I've discussed it with you before, but I had the best 21st birthday ever. Japan's drinking age is 18, so I could already drink before I was 21, but on my 21st birthday, we were at this night festival where I was standing around a sake barrel drinking all night, then they put a giant float on our shoulders and had us walk under a shower of sparks
I gave Claude some additional info (below), and it says it was the Iida Oneri Matsuri, but I can't find any videos of that at night. I'm pretty sure that's not what it was, though — this wasn't us marching down the streets (we did participate in the Tatsue no Ringon where we did that — but that was a different event). We were in a smaller, closer-knit setting, like a little countryside get-together, where they lit up the giant shower of sparks at the end.
It was July 19-20th (crossing midnight, on my birthday). The region was Iida, and we were visiting to train as part of a local bunraku puppet troupe, the Imada troupe. We ultimately performed at what they called the "World Puppetry Festival" in 2008, but that was longer after my birthday celebration.

I may be mistaken, but I always thought the drinking age in Japan is 20, like it is now.
Admittedly, you could still drink before the age of 21 in Japan, you were okay. : )
