Hello all,
I'm struggling with deciding between a few hotel/stay options that I've narrowed down for Kyoto. My partner and I plan to be in Kyoto mid-December for 3 nights (and in Tokyo for 2 nights) to celebrate our anniversary.
Looking to poll thoughts on what folks would pick and/or experiences on any of these four (even better if you have stayed at more than one of these and can preview preferences).
As you can probably tell by our choices, we're leaning towards spots that have more emphasis on local Japanese elements — more on the boutique end. We're okay with spending up to ~$900.
We're eyeing the following four options (least to most expensive):
- Campton Kiyomizu (Room 7): Very large suite with a lovely view of Yasaka Pagoda from the bedroom. We don't mind the location being in the midst of the epicenter of tourists in Gion. Hoping to check out Kiyomizudera early morning one of the days and/or roam the streets at night. A little concerned though that it could be a pain in terms of getting to car accessible streets. Service seems more hands off.
- Banyan Tree Higashiyama Kyoto (either Grand Serenity or Wellbeing Sanctuary King Room): The appeal here to us is the general hotel amenities with onsen, mini bamboo forest, restaurant/bar and what I presume would be more general high-touch service. The rooms look new and nice with some thoughtful design touches — hoping we'd be provided a room that will have a nice view. Main pause is that online the reviews veer towards being mixed (maybe attributable to initial teething issues).
- Higashiyama Shikikaboku (Executive Suite – king bed): Reviews seem to emphasize great boutique hotel service (only 8 rooms). The room looks to have some lovely traditional elements. The large bath in the room as well as there being an open-air bath on the rooftop is appealing. Two minor nitpicky things: (1) didn't come across photos of the view from the room, which has me wondering if it'll be lackluster; and (2) the salad breakfast doesn't seem too appealing.
- Sowaka: Reviews for Sowaka highlight the excellent personable service here and delicious breakfast/food. They have rooms in the "Main" house which have a lot more traditional machiya elements. They also have rooms in the "Annex" which are more modern with some traditional touches. Currently, eyeing a room in the Annex but it doesn't seem to get much natural light in the bedroom (bathroom does though). Other con is it is on pricier end — is it worth it?
Curious what you'd choose between these choices and if you have any experience to share on these!
Thanks in advance!
