Two-week Japan trip in January (Tokyo, Nakasendo, Takayama, Kyoto, Osaka) β€” advice for winter travelers?

Hi everyone!
My wife and I will be in Japan from January 20 to February 2, 2026.
We chose this period to avoid overtourism and experience a calmer, more authentic Japan β€” we know it’ll be cold, but we’re okay with that πŸ˜„

Here’s our current itinerary:
β€’ Days 1–3: Tokyo – Arriving early afternoon, planning to explore Asakusa, Shibuya, and maybe a day trip to somewhere less crowded.
β€’ Day 4: Nakatsugawa – Staying one night and walking part of the Nakasendo trail between Magome and Tsumago (weather permitting).
β€’ Days 5–6: Takayama – Enjoying the old town and local markets.
β€’ Day 7: Okuhida – Staying in a ryokan with onsen for a quiet mountain experience.
β€’ Day 8: Kanazawa – Kenrokuen Garden and samurai district.
β€’ Days 9–11: Kyoto – Exploring main temples and possibly a day trip to Nara.
β€’ Day 12: Osaka – Street food, Dotonbori, and last shopping before the flight home.

We like a balance of cities and nature (50/50), are active travelers, and we’re comfortable walking or taking local transport.
Do you think this route makes sense in January?
Are there winter-specific things we shouldn’t miss, or parts that are less enjoyable that time of year?

Thanks a lot for any feedback! πŸ™
