Visiting from the US, I noticed the escalators are slightly faster than the ones back home. They can easily catch you off guard and make you lose balance as soon as you step on it. I stood behind my elderly mother going on the down escalator and she almost fell back on me if I didn’t put my hand out to support her. She got the hang of it after going on a few other escalators. There is an adjustment period so your body gets used to it. I am sure this can also happen to children that can barely reach the hand rail.
