My wife’s coworkers said something really awful about her upcoming infertility treatment

My wife has been going through treatment at an infertility clinic, and it’s already been emotionally and physically tough on her injections, stress, the usual anxiety that comes with this kind of thing. Next week she has a surgery as part of the process, and even though she tells me not to, I want to take the day off to be with her. I want to support her. My dispatch company probably won’t let me because it isn’t 30 days in advance. I will used unpaid if I have to.

Anyway, she had to inform a few coworkers because she needed to take the day off… and their reaction honestly shocked me. Instead of showing any kind of understanding, they hit her with things like:

  • “You know you could die.”
  • “You might not wake up from the anesthesia.”

Who says that to someone who’s already anxious? The clinic has been reassuring her, telling her it’s a routine procedure and that she’ll be fine but her coworkers’ comments really shook her.

I’m mostly posting because I’m frustrated on her behalf. Has anyone else dealt with coworkers here making completely inappropriate comments about medical procedures or personal issues? How did you handle it?
