Can I re-enter Japan if my visa change result comes out while I’m abroad?

I applied for a Change of Status and got the provisional 2-month extension. I need to leave Japan briefly, but I can’t predict when the result will be decided.

If the result comes out while I’m outside Japan, can I still re-enter with my would-be expired residence card + stamp?
Or does the provisional stay become invalid the moment the result is issued?

I’ve heard you can only re-enter while the application is still pending, but not after the result is finalized.
Can anyone confirm?
