I was, until recently, working with 2 freelance income streams. I worked 15-20 hours a week freelance WFH for a Japanese travel agency, and I also stream on Twitch and make social media content as a side hustle. The streaming amount will be less than 200,000 for the year.
2025 is my first year working these jobs and I was planning on filing the blue tax form. I was planning on writing off all expenses for both jobs, and I have been keeping either digital receipts, invoices, and 領収書 mostly for things like my computer, desk, lunches for in-person work days, etc. I was also planning on writing off additional things like a new chair, a better mic for streaming and work meetings, etc.
However I was recently offered the chance to switch my travel agency work from freelance to part time, but I don't feel like my boss or husband is giving me the correct info about this. First I'm really confused about what this does to my tax situation. I understand that my part-time expenses can't be written off from the start of that contract, what does that mean if I purchase an item like a desk chair that will be used for both jobs?
Would now it be better to declare my streaming income as "miscellaneous income?" I was also told by my boss that being part time wouldn't change my health insurance, since I'll be working under 20 hours a week so my Japanese company won't be paying half.
Also I'm not sure if it's relevant but I'm currently a dependent on a spouse visa married to Japanese national. Another reason I say I think accepting a part time contract might be a mistake is that I am also confused about whether or not I can write off a portion of our mortgage since I'm WFH. My husband says I can't, but based on what reddit says, I should be able to?
I appreciate anyone's responses or resources. Thank you.
Edit: i've just realized my husband was also misinformed about when i needed to register for the blue tax form, so apparently i'll be filing the white form for 2025.
