Howdy folks. The mod team has been discussing the state of the subreddit recently and we've decided to make some changes to the rules. It has been brought to our attention (many, many, many times) that the rules are a bit restrictive and don't necessarily make the sub a welcoming place. In an effort to combat this perception we've tweaked the rules to make things a bit more open.
Please take a look at the new rules here, along with some elaboration/explanation of both what the rules mean and why each rule exists.
I'm not going to copy/paste the entire wiki page here, but I would like to further elaborate on a few of the changes:
Rule 1: You'll note that there's precisely zero ambiguity in the rule title anymore. No fancy words, just "Don't be an ass". You'll also note an utter lack of the phrase "blunt or brutal honesty". Too many people seem to feel like "brutal honesty" overrode the "don't be an ass" part of the equation.
This doesn't mean you're not allowed to correct people or critique people's plans. You just need to do so in a reasonably constructive fashion, and without commentary or judgement on them as a person.
Rule 2: We still expect posters to put some effort/legwork in before posting. But we have people from all over the world and from all walks of life posting here. Try to remember that something that might be obvious to someone who's lived in Japan for years may not be obvious to someone from another part of the world. As such try to grant people a bit of grace. If you feel like someone hasn't put in enough effort either use the report button or just give that particular post a pass. The mod team is the arbiter of what counts as "low effort", not you.
Note that this rule also includes low-effort comments as well.
Other than those two we feel like the new rules are fairly self-explanatory.
