This thing was peering at us through a hole in the rafters. It definitely wasn't a mouse or rat or a cat. It's movement was silent and deliberate. It didn't show fear rather presented itself with curiosity and seemed like it wanted to communicate. We'd consumed a fair amount of alcohol prior, but we were sober enough to know what we saw.
The house is very old, located around Nishikujo Station.
Any restaurant recommendations in the area?

Why do you believe it’s a creature? You can’t really tell from that photo what it is.
looks like a mouse to me.
Probably a native ferret or weasel. They are predators, so less fearful. They also tend to get into walls fairly regularly.

Uh …
A small Totoro, commonly found in Japan.
Probably Itachi, a Japanese weasel variant. They love living in lofts
You need to let the owners know. They will probably call their city services and the city will send over someone- they’re technically a protected species and are not allowed to be exterminated so it will take at least a week to try to trap them.
In the meantime, keep a tv and lights on in areas you are seeing the animals and especially in the kitchen. They do not like interacting with humans.
Make sure you keep all food locked up as well. Make sure all trash is outside the home. In a trash bag is not enough, they will rummage through trash.
I totally didn’t deal with this before or anything 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: the photo is unclear and admittedly doesn’t look like a weasel but in Osaka, that would be my first guess

I’m guessing this is your first time meeting the owner?
It could be an escaped pet; sugar gliders and flying squirrels are pretty commonly available in pet shops, and tons of other exotic rodents. Maybe it wasn’t scared because it’s used to people and was hoping to get some treats.
