Does the family sponsor (PR) need to be physically in Japan when entering?

So I’m moving to Japan (tokyo) for a new job in early January. By the end of January I will return to Indonesia for about 5 days to get married. After the wedding, I want my spouse to come with me to Japan immediately.

Luckily, my soon-to-be wife has a brother who lives in Japan and is a Permanent Residen, in Kyoto. So the idea is: after we get married, she will enter Japan using a Temporary Visitor Visa (90 days) sponsored by her brother.

The only issue is that when we fly to Japan right after the wedding, her brother will still be in Indonesia for about a week before returning to Japan. So when we arrive in Japan, her brother, as the sponsor will not yet be physically in Japan.

Will this cause any problem at immigration for my spouse?

  1. I don’t think that’s going to be a problem, flying to Japan without your sponsor here because no one’s actually going to check (and don’t overshare as well). However, your actual main problem here is switching Visas. Your wife will need to apply for it from Indonesia, not switch within Japan – I know this because I regularly help a friend who owns a school and tourists are no longer allowed to change visas within Japan (it was much more relaxed before, now it’s impossible). They first need to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility (CoE) which takes 1-3 months, then they use that to apply for the actual visa in their home country’s Japan embassy or consulate << this will apply to your wife as well, she won’t be allowed to switch visas within Japan.

So if your wife will come to Japan on a tourist visa or any non-resident type visa, you can begin the process of CoE application, but once you receive it, she will still need to fly back to Indonesia to apply for the actual visa (which is still then subject for approval)
