I will be in Toronto in mid to late January and will be celebrating a birthday dinner for two.
We would like to do our first omakase experience – but we are on a limited budget.
There are two places in the city with good reviews and great descriptions that each do an omakase for $98 per person —>
Sushi Yugen: https://sushiyugen.ca
Sushi Umi: https://www.sushi-umi.ca/toronto-omakase
For our first time, we don’t know how to narrow it down. Can any of the more experienced sushi people help? Has anyone been to either? Or is even if you haven’t, does anyone have any advice to share based on their websites or Instagram accounts?

I’ll take all expertise! Thanks!

I’m not familiar with them, but this could be a situation where you can’t go wrong either way. 🙂
I’d suggest reading through reviews on Google Maps. Generally I think it’s hard to find a “bad” omakase service, it’s more a question of what the best fit is for you. IMO a lot of that comes down to vibe and atmosphere, like if you’re looking for something relaxed, or more formal, how interactive the chefs and staff are, etc.
Tbh this is maybe an application of something like ChatGPT and see if it can peruse and summarize a bunch of reviews for you at the snap of a finger.
Go to Sushi Kaji. All these just under $100 is a rip to hit a price point.
Huh I swear I just saw a post asking the exact same thing.
I’ve been to both and I prefer the fish at Sushi Umi. Vibes about the same,
Sushi Kaji I’ve heard is very well-done, but a bit out of the way.
Have you tried asking on r/FoodToronto?
