Bit of an odd question, but I’ve been noticing a lot of games that will have the japanese title underneath it but in katakana.

Basically I'm wondering why this is. Because this isn't exclusive to games. I remember seeing sonic promotional material that's ソニックザヘッジホッグ something yugioh was ブルアイゾホワイトヅラゴン "blue eyes white dragon". I've been noticing this everywhere, just such a surprising amount of katakana for english names and titles.

I haven't really gotten as far as even kanji so I don't really know a whole lot about anything culturally, but I wouldn't expect it to be that everyone just sortof knows english so how did this convention catch on?
