This is the first time I've posted in this subreddit, but a few of my friends have sent me some posts about folks walking long distances and thought I'd mention some of mine.
My name is Sensei Martian, and I enjoy long walks – not necessarily on the beach though. In 2024 I walked the length of Japan, from Cape Sata in the south of Kagoshima to Cape Soya at the north tip of Hokkaido (3,268km total). In 2023 I walked the old Tokaido from Nihonbashi to Sanjo-Ohashi (about 500km). I have also walked parts of the Nakasendo, and various train lines throughout Tokyo.
Last weekend I embarked on one of the more challenging walks I’ve tackled: Walking all the way across Tokyo in one go. I walked out of a small inn at the Yamanashi-Tokyo border (Tabayama, Yamanashi) at 05:30 on November 15 and started my walk east. Nearly 100km and more than 30 hours later, I reached Ichikawa Bridge at the edge of Chiba at 12:00PM on Sunday, November 16. During this walk I followed the north side of Lake Okutama, stopping for lunch at a small American-style BBQ place near Futamatao station in Ome City.
On the approach to Tokyo proper I followed either the Ome Kaido or Shin-Ome Kaido until I reached the Yamanote line. I stayed to the north side of the Yamanote, passing through the Otsuka/Sengoku area before grabbing some McDonald's in Nippori at 06:00 to power me through the last stretch of the walk. The last few hours were rough. Due to the cooler weather, I didn’t notice I had been sweating, so my sodium levels were low, making the last 10km take WAY longer than I was hoping.
I do live-stream my walks and occasionally makes posts on other media, but really just do it for the love of the game and to introduce Japan to the rest of the world.
I'll be out and about today, but will try to answer any questions about this walk (or my other walks) when I get the chance. Thanks for reading
