According to the Public Enterprise Bureau, in the early hours of the 24th, a water pipe conveying water from a dam buried in Shioya, Ogimi Village, to a water purification plant burst due to aging. Water distribution from the water purification plant to the affected cities, towns, and villages is scheduled to stop at noon that day. As there is a certain amount of water stored in reservoirs and distribution tanks owned by the Public Enterprise Bureau and each local government, the water supply cutoff may be delayed.
There is a growing possibility of water cutoffs in the entire areas of Kin Town, Yomitan Village, Kadena Town, Uruma City, Nishihara Town, Yonabaru Town, Tomigusuku City, Haebaru Town, Itoman City, Yaese Town, and Nanjo City.
In Onna Village, Okinawa City, Kitanakagusuku Village, Nakagusuku Village, Urasoe City, and Naha City, some areas supplied by the Ishikawa Water Purification Plant and Nishihara Water Purification Plant may experience water outages. Areas supplied by the Chatan Water Purification Plant are not expected to be affected by the leak.
The Public Enterprise Bureau is currently working on restoration and operating from other water sources. Public Enterprise Bureau Director Tsutomu Miyagi held an emergency press conference on the 24th and apologized, saying, "We apologize for the great inconvenience and trouble this will cause."
The following municipalities are expected to experience water outages after noon on the 24th.
