Newly harvested rice becomes “dead stock”. Major distributors are demanding government to buy them

TL;DR Many bags of rice on supermarket shelves are those harvested in 2024 and from a particular major rice distributors. There were news about rice shortage in Spring, but it seems like the major rice distributor actually had large amount of rice in their warehouses.

It seems like the major rice distributor is demanding the government to buy the rice from them and then sell them at lower price.

Even though regular rice isn't selling too well, organic rice is selling well. It may be because price of organic rice were higher from the beginning. Customers may be choosing organic rice because price of regular rice has risen and they may be choosing to buy organic rice because the price difference has become smaller.
