Need health insurance for Japanese 85‑year-old visiting the US — any advice?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning to visit family in the United States with my 85‑year-old grandmother (I have dual, but she’s only a Japanese citizen). She’ll be staying 3–4 months there. She doesn’t have any serious illnesses, but I’m worried about what would happen if she needs medical care in the US, since medical care is stupidly expensive.

Most Japanese travel health insurance plans I’ve found online seem to exclude older travelers or have very strict restrictions for elderly people. If anyone has experience with good insurers or ideas for someone her age and length of stay in the US, I would really appreciate it.

  1. With that age she is enrolled in NHI, so have a look into 海外療養費制度 (kaigai ryoyohi seido, Reimbursement of Overseas Medical Expenses), which can be applied for standard procedures, which would be done in Japan and you can get reimbursement for the payments and only pay the price as in Japan. But the costs needs to be paid beforehand and it can take 3 months or so to receive it back. I never used it myself so I can only point you in the direction.

This is the form looks like:

Also getting a travel insurance with a credit card can be an option.

  2. If you have no luck finding one online, your grandma and you can visit 保険代理店 and talk in-person. It’s more costly but tends to be more flexible.
