How do you politely approach people for street portraits in Osaka?

Hi everyone! This is mainly for people living in Osaka, but anyone with experience is welcome.

I’m a nature photographer and have been living on a small island in Kyushu for a little over a year. My Japanese is still a work in progress, so I’m not super confident yet.

Lately I’ve been wanting to try street photography and portrait work, and Osaka seems like the perfect place to start. I’m curious about the best, most natural way to ask Japanese people (or foreigners) if I can take their photo, especially when their fashion or makeup catches my eye. I just really don’t want to come across as a creep. I’ve been shooting animals and landscapes for so long that I’m extra cautious when it comes to photographing people.

I’ve read about the general rules and culture around photography in Japan, but I’d love to hear real experiences. Is it okay to ask for someone’s Instagram too, either to send them the photos or to contact them if I need permission later for publishing?

Would really appreciate your thoughts. Thanks so much!
