G'day! I'm looking to commence university next year, and I'm just trying to decide between two different pathways. I'm interested in teaching as a career, but I'm heavily considering trying to work in Japan or China, unless I really enjoy being in Australian classrooms/I have something that keeps me here. I'd do my degree, become certified, work here as a teacher for at least a couple years, then start applying overseas to see if I get anything reasonable.
I'm 29 right now, and obviously it'll be a good 6 years before I'm eligible to work overseas as a teacher. It's my current plans, though. I'll be studying teaching regardless.
My two current options are studying a dual degree with a Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts. Otherwise, I can study an integrated Bachelor of Science/Master of Teaching, most likely specialising in chemistry or biology. The difference between art and science really just being that I have the score to study science at the first university, but I don't have the prerequisite math class from high school, since their Bachelor of Science includes a math major. I can definitely get into the science degree at the 2nd university, though.
Getting the dual Bachelor of Art/Education is the same length (4 years) and roughly same cost as getting the Bachelor of Science/Master of Teaching. Would there be much of a difference in my career desirability between the two?
