Trip report: Aomori City nightlife was… painfully disappointing

I recently took a trip to Aomori City to check out the nightlife and social scene. I lived in Misawa for three years and had a great time with the drinking and social culture in Misawa and Hachinohe, so I honestly expected Aomori City to have a similar vibe.

Man, I was wrong.

This was by far the most difficult city I’ve ever tried to socialize in while living in Japan. Striking up conversations felt almost impossible, and the atmosphere was just… off. It felt like there were only guys out everywhere I went, and I couldn’t figure out where the females were.

The few women I did see were all glued to their boyfriends, so the whole thing just felt like a giant boys’ night with no real social vibe. It was honestly pretty disappointing.

Which sucks, because I love everything else about Aomori—the culture, the food, the scenery. The city itself is cool, but the nightlife just wasn’t it for me.

Has anyone else had a similar experience there?

    Said no one ever. Now you know. Seems like you just base a good nightlife scene on whether there are women around though.

  5. As someone from a pretty equal bumfuck nowhere — you, sir, are doing it wrong. You don’t go seeking for nightlife to a place where most people are at home by 8 and don’t go out (try walking anywhere that’s not city’s dead center at night — it’s so empty and quiet you can hear your own breath, and even lights in the houses are out). And you’re really not supposed to be loud. Rural Japan is just not built for it, and Aomori is as rural as it gets. Apart from the obvious Tokyo and Osaka, try Nagoya, Sapporo, or Okinawa.

  7. Young people in the military are the only reason for the nightlife in Misawa and Hachinohe (seriously the entirety of the nightlife in Misawa is walking distance from the main gate of Misawa Base), so it’s not reasonable to expect a similar situation from a city that is a two hour drive away.
