Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory
If a M7.0 or greater earthquake occurs in or around the probable source region of megaquakes along the Japan and Chishima Trenches, the possibility of a large earthquake is considerd to be relatively high.
JMA issues Off the Coast of Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory in such cases, even though probability based on actual worldwide records is only about 1/100

Started off soft and then started picking up. Good thing it was at night. My kid didn’t even wake up haha.
Just got my NERV app bipping. There is a tsunami warning too.
Stay safe, everyone.
felt it for like 10 seconds in sapparo, damn
Just had it in Tokyo felt like forever. Crazy long. Came here to figure out what happened.
Dang that’s big. I’m in Tokyo but I thought I was just woozy from being sleepy, until it lasted a *really* long time.
Felt in Yokohama. Long wave swaying. Stay safe!

All the way down in Saitama, house felt like it was floating on a boat. Not the most aggressive shaking I’ve felt since 2011 but certainly the biggest swaying since then.
Hope everyone up in Aomori stays safe.

My app says 7.6 now!
Up to 3m tsunami predicted. Not great for people trying to evacuate in the middle of the night…
I felt it here in Ikebukuro. It was damn long. So long I was able to dress up and be ready.
Felt it in shibuya. It was long and started getting up to get out.
7.6 is no joke!!!
I live in western Aomori prefecture and it was pretty big. Lasted probably about 90 seconds.
Kids didn’t wake up but lots of stuff fell of the shelves. My poor amiibo.
Biggest one I’ve felt since moving here. Probably biggest I’ve felt since 2011.
Watching some of the coverage on tv and seeing a lot of boats leaving port. I never thought about it but I’m guessing it’s safer for them in open waters?
I was in the bathtub at the hotel on the 12th floor in Tokyo when it hit and the bathtub water started squishing in the whole bathtub started going back-and-forth. It was very noticeable, even here. I actually just opened my phone to see if there is an alert and this thread came up. Hope everybody’s OK.
Tsunami warning is out for parts of Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido. Please do not go close to the waters.
In misawa(aomori) it was really bad, the biggest I felt, some of our stuff fell off and broke. My poor cats and dog are still freaked out 😭.
Currently living in Aomori and it felt like someone took our house put it in a bottle and shook it. Very scary. I hope everyone is okay
The JMA is likely to issue a [Hokkaido and Sanriku Subsequent Earthquake Advisory](https://www.bousai.go.jp/jishin/nihonkaiko_chishima/pdf/multileaflet-chishima01.pdf), as earthquakes of this scale in this area could be a precursor for a megaquake.
While the advisory won’t call for an immediate evacuation and life can continue as normal, the advisory will call for residents on the Pacific coast from Hokkaido to Chiba to exercise more caution than usual and ensure they are prepared for earthquakes and tsunamis over the next week or so.
While there isn’t cause for panic—the government says that about 1 out of 100 quakes that trigger this advisory will actually be followed by a megaquake—it’s a good idea to stay vigilant, even if the tsunami warning is eventually cancelled.
Three more earthquakes have hit the area, 5.6, 3.6, and 3.9 as of 5 mins ago.
I live in Aomori, right next to the epicenter
It felt like being shoved in one of those drink shakers the bartenders use and thrown around
Anything not bolted down moved or had fallen over
Def not sleeping the rest of the night!
I’m up in aomori. Worst I felt in 4 years. Still hopped up on adrenaline
If you’re curious about the tsunami’s status, you can check the observed tsunami heights here:
https://www.jma.go.jp/bosai/map.html#contents=tidelevel
Click any symbol on the map, and you can see the height in the chart below. Kuji Port recorded a height of about 60cm.
Fortunately, it seems the earthquake struck right at low tide.
Over a min, maybe two, in Sapporo. Last time I felt anything like that, we lost power for 4 days. 2018. What a shitty weekend that was. Just put up Christmas decorations. They are great seismometers.
Anyone here in Hachinohe? I have family there and hoping the tsunami isn’t too bad.
Good thing the shinkansen wasn’t running during that time. I would have shit my pants if I was in the under-water shinkansen tunnel between Hokkaido and Honshu…
