Okinawa with a 2 year old in end Jan 2026, recommendations please!

Hi I’ve just booked a 9 day trip 19 – 28 Jan to Okinawa. It’s my first trip to a new place since COVID, and my first time traveling with our 2 year old, so I’m both excited and overwhelmed. All suggestions welcome!

  • Can speak Japanese fairly fluently. We’ve both lived in Japan before (Tokyo, Saitama, Ibaraki) so navigating public transport & communication is not a problem.
  • I can drive, and willing to drive if it really changes the whole experience. I drive regularly in my country but am not the most confident driver. My current car is a kei-car but I’m expecting the rental car to be bigger. I’ve never done road trips and worry about my child being in an unfamiliar child seat.
  • My partner is not a fan of the outdoors, and my toddler sunburns easily as she is fair. She does love splashing around in the water, and we don’t mind a beach visit, though not likely to do snorkeling as she’s only 2. I don’t think island hopping is in the works.
  • We don’t mind staying put in Naha for the entire trip if that makes sense? We are keen on the aquarium at Motobu so my initial gut feel is that we can just do 2 areas for 4-5days each? Or should we just remain at Naha throughout and do day trips?
  • I would love to be able to bring my toddler to playgrounds, anything with animals, play spaces suitable for toddler. Doesn’t need to be fancy at all.

We’ve just booked tickets yesterday and I don’t know how to sort out accommodations without knowing where I wanna go! All recommendations welcomed, thank you so much hivemind!
