Ohhh… the extreme one who I seen lately in politician interviews is the “free journalist yokota” 横田一 and フリーホッター “Free Hotta” who kept pushing their agenda.
Well, haven’t we seen this happen before in Japan — glad to see this topic get more coverage. But, it should be noted that this dynamic is neither new (even in postwar Japan) nor limited to media figures within Japan. When the Ramseyer controversy broke out in 2021, international academics who pushed back (e.g. Amy Stanley) became the target of thousands of *neto uyo* who still harass them and their departments to this day.
It’s been pretty sobering to observe from the outside, as these actors have been encouraged and propped up by parties like Sanseito and other orgs linked with the more extreme members of the LDP.
