Japan to Launch Cargo-Only Shinkansen in 2026


JR East will start running a cargo-only Shinkansen on March 23, 2026.

  • Converted from E3 “Tsubasa” trains, all seats removed for flat cargo floors.
  • Can carry up to 17.4 tons (~1,000 boxes) per trip.
  • Depots handle loading/unloading with automated vehicles.
  • Weekday trips: Morioka → Tokyo, linked with E5 “Yamabiko” trains.
  • International expansion planned with JAL Group and potentially Japan Post.
