SWIFT code + branch code + account number in place of IBAN

I need to transfer money from the U.K. to Japan. The person that I'm paying is telling me to use SWIFT code + branch code + account number in place of IBAN since Japan does not use those.

Can anyone confirm this is correct, or am I misunderstanding them?

  1. When I needed that info for a transfer from the US to Japan, my Japanese bank didn’t know but my states bank got the info from the US branch of my Japanese bank.. don’t know if that will help or not

  2. IBAN is basically a European system that has also been adopted by quite a few smaller countries (economies) outside of Europe. It is not used by Japan.

Edit: If you want to make your life easier, get a Wise account. Assuming you are transferring less than around 1m JPY it will not only be by far the easiest option, but you will get more JPY for the GBP sent to you. If you are transferring considerably more than 1m JPY then consider opening an account with Shinsei Bank to receive the funds.

  3. Yes and no: Japanese bank account don’t have IBAN. But just replacing the IBAN with this is not going to work.
You need to contact your bank to know which information they (assuming their website doesn’t allow you to add non-IBAN account).
For example from a french bank to a Japanese bank the three information above are indeed needed, but also the receiver name and their address.
