Hi everyone,
I’m moving to Tokyo on a Working Holiday Visa and I’m currently trying to build a realistic monthly budget. I plan on working part-time, and rent is already covered, so I’m looking for estimated costs excluding rent.
Right now, I’m estimating around ¥55,000 per month for transportation, food, and general miscellaneous expenses, plus ¥50,000 per month for fun spending such as cafés and day trips outside Tokyo a few times a month. I’m trying to figure out whether this sounds realistic, too low, or overly conservative.
Lifestyle-wise, I don’t drink or go to bars or clubs. I prefer quieter activities like visiting temples, shrines, parks, walking around neighborhoods, and photography, though I do enjoy cafés occasionally.
When it comes to food, I’m trying to figure out what a realistic budget looks like if I cook most of my meals at home and only eat out two or three times a week.
If you’ve lived in Tokyo, especially on a Working Holiday Visa or while working part-time, I’d really appreciate hearing what your monthly spending looked like, any costs that surprised you, and any tips for keeping expenses reasonable.
Thanks in advance.
