Some Chinese travel agencies have halted sales of new tours to Japan. But many Chinese visitors to Japan arrange their own flights instead of going through agencies. Group tours accounted for only around 10% of Chinese tourists visiting Japan in 2024, according to the Japan Tourism Agency.
Japan is also a major study-abroad destination for Chinese. Roughly 120,000 Chinese students were studying in Japan as of May 2024, according to the Japan Student Services Organization — the most of any country and accounting for around 37% of all foreign students here.
An official from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology said that "at this point, no major impact has been confirmed" from China's advisory.
"Most of the students have studied at a Japanese language school and have made extensive preparations," a university representative said. "It is unlikely that they will cancel their enrollment, which is approaching next spring."
