American living in Japan

Hi everyone! I’m a 21-year-old female from the U.S. and I’m really interested in working or interning in Japan, ideally in Tokyo or nearby (Yokohama, Chiba, Saitama, etc.).

One of the biggest things I’m trying to figure out is housing — I’m specifically looking for opportunities that provide housing, subsidize it, or help arrange it, since I know rent and deposits can be a big barrier for foreigners. I’m open to a variety of fields (office work, international companies, hospitality, teaching-adjacent roles, internships, etc.) as long as it’s legitimate and foreigner-friendly.

I’d love advice on:

• What types of jobs or internships commonly cover housing for Americans

• Companies, programs, or industries I should look into

• Whether working holiday visas, internships, or company sponsorship make the most sense at my age

• Any recommended websites, recruiters, or programs

• Realistic expectations for pay, housing quality, and location near Tokyo

If you’ve done something similar or know someone who has, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experience. I’m trying to plan smartly and avoid scams, so any guidance is super helpful. Thanks in advance! 🙏
