In response to comments made by a source in the Prime Minister's Office in charge of security policy under the Takaichi Sanae administration regarding nuclear possession, four Nagasaki atomic bomb survivors' organizations issued a statement on the 24th stating, "A-bomb survivors will never tolerate such remarks that trample on the 80 years of recovery from that difficult time. We strongly protest."

The statement also cited comments made by LDP National Security Research Council Chairman Itsunori Onodera on a NHK program on the 21st, in which he called for a debate on the Three Non-Nuclear Principles, calling the remarks "a reckless argument based on the illusion of nuclear deterrence." "As a country that was bombed in war, Japan should take the lead in nuclear abolition no matter how difficult it may be, and we must never lower the flag of nuclear abolition," they said.

The leaders of the four atomic bomb survivors' organizations held a press conference in Nagasaki on the 24th, and Tadako Kawazoe (81), chair of the Nagasaki Prefectural Peace Movement Center Atomic Bomb Survivors Association, said, "Prime Minister Takaichi should make a statement firmly rejecting the possession of nuclear weapons." Shigemitsu Tanaka (85), chairman of the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Victims Council (Nagasaki Hakusankyo), said, "There is a sense of crisis that Japan has made a major turn toward war over the past year. It is important to repeatedly voice our opposition and sound the alarm."

The statement was sent to the Prime Minister's Office, as well as the Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Restoration Party. The four organizations also released an appeal on the 12th calling on the government to enact the Three Non-Nuclear Principles into law.

  1. I might get downvoted for this,

but in a world where powerful countries already have nuclear weapons, having one can act as deterrence rather than aggression. The key point is a no-first-use nuclear policy -> nukes should exist only for self-defense, not as a tool to initiate war. The goal isn’t to attack anyone, but to prevent being attacked in the first place.

  2. These survivors have moral authority and perspective and deserve to be listened to carefully, but they cannot be allowed to set the terms of debate about whether Japan needs these weapons now. The world is very different from 1945.

  3. Well what did USA is unforgivable but let’s get into the historic context, Japan was amongst the worst criminals that ever existed (not everyone ofc but as a country) and they even tried to backstab at pearl harbor.

They just received a backlash for what they did to others, so I think we should remember about atomics bombs but it’s not the poor Japanese vs the evil Americans

If USA has to pay, then Japan must pay for China and Korea and many others too

  4. “Once a upon a time, these evil people came and dropped these evil bombs on us and look how we suffered.”

Hmm, that’s an interesting place to start a story.

  5. Their fears and stance is completely understandable. If you have ever been to the Peace Memorial, you can see how devastating the atomic bombs were not only on people, but for generations people passed on genetic injuries they received as a result of being exposed to the chemicals. The survivors were ostracized. There were even people who survived the bombing in Hiroshima and also Nagasaki. I really don’t agree with the new prime minister. Her stance on foreigners is going to hurt Japan economically. This, holding of nuclear weapons will also hurt Japan. Countries who possess nuclear weapons are seen as a threat. It will put Japan on the chess board as a country that can and may be a threat.

  6. The peace Museum in Hiroshima and Nagasaki would be in an awkward spot if Japan adds nukes

  7. The world doesn’t need nuclear, the world just need to stand together against any aggressor that starts killing. Too bad humans are born selfish, that’s why bully still exists today in every part of society.

  8. It was the USA that nuked you guys, owning nukes is how you not get nuked again.

Seriously, the way Americans redirected hatred Japanese had for them toward Japanese themselves need to be studied. Americans are not geopolitical masterminds most of the time, but when they are, they are terrifying and one sees how they are the sole global superpower.

  9. To reach a world where nobody has nuclear weapons, we must first pass through a world where everyone has them; only when the threat is universal does the weapon become useless.

  10. Korean here.

I say we both get them. I say maybe even share them.
I trust you fuckers more than the Americans and the Chinese.

  11. Well. Japan having nukes will prevent another Nagasaki. Them protesting is a good example of why technocracy > democracy. These matters must be left to the people that understand the grander scale of things.

  12. Well. That’s all well and lovely sentiment. However l, Being on a world stage where your enemies have nukes and ACCs and more military than you can muster In a decade….. don’t think you wanna be bringing a spork to a gun fight which is all Japan has right now tbph. What these peace huggers plan to do when China rolls on Japan??? Beg the US… lmfao. Sure. Hold ur breath on that and die of suffocation. Doubt ur getting any divine winds like what thwarted so many other invasions like mongols. Time to get real about sovereign defense and what it takes. Cling to the past…. Get buried by it.

  13. Maybe instead of sacrificing young men n civilians, if country leaders want a war, we should put them in MMA rings instead.

  14. Yeah, idealistic sentiment but that’s not going to work when your adversary already has nukes and will not hesitate to use it given the chance😅

  15. The big picture regarding this issue is what would Japan having nukes solve? Japan is the USA’s defacto gate to Asia. If anyone tries to do anything to Japan, then USA would retaliate. Not only the USA but a huge number of nations would want to become involved in a war for the defense of Japan.

Japan doesn’t need nukes because too many nations would defend Japan if attacked. In a strange sense, it really is one of the best nations to be protected from any kind of real war.

  16. Nukes should no longer be necessary in this day and age, unless you’re trying to blow up an incoming meteor. Yet, one cannot blame them for exploring ways to ensure their safety when they have 3 nuclear-armed countries around them that are unfriendly or hostile. Ideally, all nukes should be destroyed even if that means more wars, but that will never happen before ww3. Realistically, Japan won’t be able to make nukes any time soon, even if it wants to, however.

Furthermore, as we are edging 90 years since WW2, the lesson of history should be how imperialistic goals and aggressive mindset amongst the country’s leaders can lead to atrocities, instead of only how “this country” led to the atrocities.

  17. As the only one being nuked, it is the most eligible country to acquire nuclear deterrence, especially given the lesson of Ukraine, in a world where Russia, China, North Korea already have nukes.

  18. Americans don’t need your forgiveness in the same way Japan doesn’t need China or Koreas lol. So go kick rocks

  19. Why does it seem like every news article on Japan is nuts lately? Have insane people taken over the govt, like in the US? Or is it just the algo warmongering? I’m totally out of the loop

  20. Japan did far, far worse to China, Korea, and the rest of East and Southeast Asia. I feel no sympathy. Japan clearly hasn’t shown any remorse. It hides behind the atomic bombings to justify their victim mentality.

  21. The US chose to not give a fuck about general world peace and protecting its allies anymore. So it’s a matter of survival to get nuclear weapons. Especially with Russia and China next door.
