Going to Japan for undergrads (kyoto). How do I properly learn Japanese?

Hey everyone! I’m moving to Japan in September, so I have about 7 months to study the language, and I’d really like to get as fluent as possible. Of course, I know true fluency takes real-life conversations, which I’ll only fully get once I’m there, but I’d still like to prepare well and maybe even get some language certificates by taking exams.

I’d really appreciate any advice or tips ,things I should do or avoid, and I’d also love to hear about your own Japanese learning journeys. If you have any book recommendations or good ytchannels, please share them!

For some background: back in grade 10, I was a big anime fan and got really into studying Japanese. I can read hiragana and katakana, have some vocabulary, and know around 100 kanji. However, I’m pretty rusty now since I haven’t practiced in a while. That said, I’m very dedicated to learning languages, and grammar usually comes pretty easily to me.

Thank you so much!
