seller request cancellation mercari

Guys, I'm really worried about the cancellation process on Mercari Japan.

There are like three confirmation menus asking me, "Are you sure?" The seller started asking me to cancel the order, and I responded, "No, why? Why don’t you cancel?" Because if the buyer doesn’t have the item, why would we as the buyer need to cancel?

I’m new to Mercari and I don’t understand why the buyer has to cancel. I read that if the buyer sends a cancellation request, it can have repercussions on my buyer profile. The shipping deadline was over a week ago, and Mercari still keeps asking me for a return method. But if the item is marked as "not sent," why do I need to select a return option or be responsible for returning it as the buyer?

Also, it says “messages won’t be available after cancellation,” and that if I am SUPER sure the seller and I agreed on “no return,” maybe the buyer can just refuse the cancellation request. It also says I need to “confirm the process and shipping cost before cancelling.”

It feels like there will be negative repercussions, but I’m just new to Mercari Japan and feeling overwhelmed. I’ve also tried contacting Mercari support, but despite many people saying they respond quickly, my inquiries have been sitting unanswered for days — just automatic replies.

Is Mercari Japan really like this?

Also, if I cancel, does the buyer get a bad review even if the shipping deadline has passed?

Any advice or clarification would be greatly appreciated!
