Hi everyone,
I’m currently in Japan working as a Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) in the manufacturing sector. My goal is to transition into a Full-stack Developer role (Next.js/React/Node.js).
I am currently pursuing a BCA online, but I want to switch to a tech job sooner. According to the MOJ Public Notice No. 437, passing the Fundamental Information Technology Engineer Examination (FE) waives the university degree requirement for the "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities" visa.
I'm planning to take the exam in April (CBT). I have the CS background, but the technical Kanji is the challenge.
My questions for the community:
-
Has anyone here successfully transitioned to an Engineer visa using ONLY the FE exam (no degree)?
-
How did immigration handle your application? Was it straightforward?
-
Do recruiters or Japanese companies (SMEs or startups) actually value this certificate, or is it seen as just a "visa hack"?
-
Are there any specific companies known for being open to hiring people who prove their skills through national certifications rather than traditional degrees?
I see this path mentioned in law, but very few "success stories" online. Would love to hear stories from anyone who has walked this path or knows someone who has.
