I am heading to Japan next month and have been using the JR Pass calculator to decide which pass to get. However, I find it a bit confusing. I wish to explore around Osaka, Himeji, Kyoto etc and then take the shinkansen down to Fukuoka where I will visit Nagasaki and go and see the migratory cranes in Izumi. This means while in Kyushu I will mostly remain in the northern area but would like to make a trip as far south as Izumi.
Using the calculator, it says getting the Sanyo Sanin Northern Kyushu Pass will pay for itself. However, this pass does not cover Izumi/Kagoshima? Or does it? I am not sure why the calculator suggests getting that.
Given my plans, should I get the All Kyushu pass as well as the Setouchi pass? This would bring the cost close to a full 7 day JR Pass though. Is there a bus that goes to Izumi that's cheaper than the shinkansen? I really would like to see the cranes. Thanks for any advice/tips.
