Hi everyone. I am hoping to get some feedback on my Hokkaido trip in July. This will be my first time in Hokkaido but my 4th time coming back to Japan. The main feedback I am looking for it where I should spend the two extra free days I have listed at the end, but any other advice is welcome. Right now I am thinking of maybe putting one extra day into Sapporo and another into one of the national parks. I will have a rental car the entire time. Thank you for the advice!
Day 1 – Tokyo, Hakodate
- Arrive in HND at 1pm-ish
- Arrive in Hakodate at 6:45pm, taxi/bus/drive to hotel Stay overnight
Day 2 – Full day hakodate
- Onuma park? 30 car ride
- Morning market, Fort goryokaku, Mount hakodate observ
- Cape tachimachi, hakodate park
- Stay overnight night at same hotel
Day 3 – Lake Toya
- Drive ~3 hours along Uchiura Bay to Toyako onsen bus terminal
- Lake toya attractions, usuzan west craters, drive around lake, ropeway
- Overnight at toyako onsen
Day 4 – Noboribetsu
- Drive from toyako onsen to noboribetsu (1 hour)
- Jigokudani hell valley
- Shikotsu-Toya National Park area (maybe just stop by tomorrow on way to sapporo)
- Overnight at ryokan
Day 5- Sapporo
- Drive from noboribetsu, by lake shikotsu/poropinai observatory, then up to sapporo (2.5 hours)
- Stay overnight
Day 6 – Full day sapporo
Day 7 – Sapporo/Otaru
- Take 40 minute train to otaru station from sapporo (could also drive, takes 20 min more)
- Canal area, museums
- Stay again overnight again at sapporo
Day 8 – Furano
- Drive from Sappro to furano (2.15hrs)
- Flower fields
- Stay overnight in Furano
Day 9 – Drive through Biei
- 40 min drive to Biei
- Patchwork road/Panorama road
- Hokusei hill observation
- Zerubu hill
- Drive to asahidake onsen from biei (45 minutes)
- Stay overnight at asahidake onsen
Day 10 – Daisetsuzan national park
- Full day using rental car
- Hiking and stuff here
- Stay overnight at same place in asahidake onsen
Day 11 – Asahikawa
- Drive 1 hour to asahikawa from asahidake onsen
- Check out zoo and ramen here
- Stay overnight at asahikawa
Day 12 – sounkyo onsen
- Drive to Sounkyo onsen, about 1.5 hrs
- Obako rock formations
- Waterfalls in area
- Stay overnight in sounkyo onsen
Day 13 – shiretoko national park
- drive 4 hours to shiretoko national park
- Find somewhere to stay overnight
Day 14 – Full day shiretoko
Day 15 – Kawayu onsen
- Drive 1.5 hours to kawayu onsen in akan Mashup national park
- Lake aktan, Mashu, kussharo
- 阿寒湖, see まりも
- Overnight at kawayuonsen
Day 16 – kushiro
- Stop by kushiro marshlands (about an hour from kawayu onsen) on way to kushiro
- Overnight in kushiro
Day 17 – FREE DAY TO MOVE UPWARD
Day 18 – FREE DAY TO MOVE UPWARD
Day 19 – END, Kushiro to Tokyo
- Take home domestic flight that morning from KUH to HND
