I’m in the process of applying for Japanese citizenship. I live on the outskirts of Tokyo, and my 法務局 office is in Hachioji.
Before calling to make a reservation for the initial consultation (初回相談), I did a lot of research on what documents are required. However, when I called, they very strongly told me (間違えなく) to bring ALL the documents listed on their website.
Of course I plan to prepare everything, but I’m honestly a bit worried. If they decide something needs to be corrected or if an extra document is required, will I be forced to wait another 3–4 months for the next consultation? Has the process changed recently, or is this just a Tokyo-area thing?
Also, about the 5-year requirement: I haven’t been abroad continuously for more than a month in any single year, but I do travel overseas fairly often for holidays and business. On average, I’ve spent around 50 days per year outside Japan over the past 5 years. Could this be an issue?
Sorry for the long post 😅 If anyone has gone through the process recently or can share their experience, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks in advance!
