My SO of ~2 years is an accountant (both of us in Sapporo) but her family owns/runs a small minshuku in rural hokkaido. Her dad has arthritis and from the first year we met she's floated the idea of her taking over for her parents several times, but recently she's told me its something she wants to start doing this year (and by extension marriage)
I am a software developer working hybrid, but it'd mean we tie the knot this year and help run the inn full time, while she transitions to taking over for her parents. There are no other employees at the inn (or at least at the present)
- I'm most worried about the future prospects of running an inn in rural Hokkaido. Population decline, crumbling infrastructure, declining tourism, etc. If I go into this, I'd want us to have a Plan B, just not sure what it'd be for either of us. I don't know if it's possible for me to work a remote software job while helping out the inn.
- I've worked all kinds of jobs in my home country (dish washer, waiter, line cook, mechanic) but I always despised the customer service facing side of things. How is working in the hospitality industry here?
- Education for our future kids. I'd want to give them as many options as possible so they could go anywhere, and be anything. My assumption is that the road of course would narrow if their education is in rural Hokkaido. But is it possible/recommended to pay for their housing so they can attend a High School far away in Sapporo or Tokyo?
