A couple of weeks ago, I was pulled over by police for “using my phone” while driving. When they stopped me, I showed them that it was not a phone, but a sandwich I had just bought from 7-Eleven a few minutes earlier. After that, they told me to be careful while driving, but then immediately asked if they could check my truck.
They had me step out of my Toyota Hilux and performed a pat-down. After that, they searched through everything: the glove box, center console, door compartments, and even my backpack.
I live in an area where many people know me, so it was pretty embarrassing to be standing on the side of the road with multiple officers and all my doors open while they went through my belongings. There were three officers in a standard police cruiser.
When they finished, they simply said, “Be careful and have a nice day,” and left.
Is this normal? It felt like they were trying to find a reason to search in hopes of uncovering something.
