Handy-man, Home repair person needed

I have some damage (a hole) to a wall. Was looking into getting it fixed but a friend told me any service I contract will need to contact the real estate agency/landlord before doing any work.

Is this true? I don’t want to get the landlord involved.

Are there any services that anyone here knows of which wouldn’t bother with getting approval from the landlord?

I plan to move out soon after living here for over a decade and don’t know how much of my deposit I’ll get back from this damage so would like to fix this before if I can.

On a related note does anyone know what type of “wear and tear”’is permissible when a tenant moves out that will keep a their deposit intact mostly? I heard there are quite a bit of damages that we won’t be held accountable for but I find that hard to believe. If anyone has knowledge on this please share as well.
