




No fancy camera for these ones, I'm afraid. But one of my favorite things to do on trips to Japan is to browse retro game stores and see the colorful collections of cartridges lined up. These photos are variously from Akihabara in Tokyo (2023), Den Den Town in Osaka (2025), and a Book-Off in Kanazawa (also 2025). I particularly love to buy GameBoy games: they're usually cheap, and they are often simple enough that they can be played with minimal Japanese.
I also like to find unusual hardware that never made it outside of Japan. There's things a lot of folks know about like the WonderSwan and the Famicom Disk System, but sometimes I stumble on systems I'd never even heard of. Take a look behind the Saturn collection – what even is an Arcadia? (This, apparently!).
