Osaka City Receives Anonymous 21-kg Gold Bullion Donation for Waterworks

Osaka City announced on the 19th that it had received a donation of 21 kilograms of gold bullion from an anonymous individual, valued at a total of 566.54 million yen at market prices as of that date. The city plans to sell the gold within the next fiscal year and use the proceeds for its waterworks in line with the donor’s wishes.

According to the city’s Waterworks Bureau, the donor first contacted the city by telephone through the municipal office’s service counter, offering to make the donation. The city took possession of the gold bullion on November 18 last year. The same individual had also donated 500,000 yen in cash in October.

The city intends to sell the bullion within the next fiscal year and apply the funds to waterworks projects such as measures to address the aging of water pipes. At the donor’s request, the city will not hold a ceremony to present a certificate of appreciation.

At a regular press conference on the 19th, Mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama said, “We are grateful for this very generous donation and appreciate the offer. We will make careful use of it for the waterworks.”
