Best way to plan cheaper (not just fastest) train trips from Tokyo?

Hey

I live in Tokyo and I’m trying to explore more of the surrounding areas. Cities, temples, random countryside spots, that kind of thing.

Most of the time I just plug Point A → Point B into Google Maps. But Google gives me the fastest route, it often includes a tons of transfers and/or a slightly faster combo that ends up being way more expensive. Sometimes it saves like 20 minutes on a 3.5 hour trip but costs noticeably more and involves a bunch of annoying transfers. Meanwhile I could found there’s a simpler “just take this one train line” option that’s cheaper and less stressful. I just needed to know it, then figure it out to go to the departure station.

How do you guys plan longer trips from Tokyo? Do you use something other than Google Maps?

Thank you!
