When I started at this BOE, the JTE bragged about how much they value English education here. “The kids start weekly English classes from the kindergarten level!”
Meanwhile, I have JHS 3rd years struggling to ask basic questions like “When is your birthday?” These same kids can’t read anything without katakana over every single word. And literally 90% of the students in this school IMMEDIATELY run to AI or Google Translate the moment they are asked to use half a braincell. It’s gotten to the point where I’m HAPPY to receive an assignment written in broken English and not BS like “We kindly request your cooperation with this pressing matter” from the same kids who blue-screen at any question beyond “How are you?”
I feel like I’m the only uni teacher that sticks to a strict Mon-Fri 9-5 work email schedule. All my immediate colleagues are sending emails at 3am on weekends waiting for me to respond…Does anyone else relate?
Any recs for series to watch for extensive viewing for kids aged 14-16? I was thinking British Bake Off but at 60 minutes an episode, it might be difficult. Another option is MasterChef junior. I want to keep it simple, no subtitles, and repetitive enough that the vocabulary stays in the same area throughout the season.
What’s up with Interac apologists all of a sudden? Ran into two back to back.
Any folks still at eikaiwas (regardless of big chain or small independent school), how’s business?
We all know the problems of places like GABA and NOVA. But it appears that with the general attitude towards foreign things in Japan overall, many English businesses might be losing customers- that’s the case where I’m at now, and we’ve been notified that our already-small team is going to be made even smaller. However, I have a theory as to why this school has been losing more customers than getting new students (mostly due to MAJOR management mishandling), but I’m curious if any other eikaiwas are also losing students in general
Any tips for running undergraduate research and thesis Seminars that awkwardly fit into departments that are outside your field?
I have examined syllabi from professors in similar situation. Everything just seems to come out generic social science themed around the department.
Are there any people on here who are/have been through a correspondence university for getting a teaching license? I’d like to get some tips or advice if possible!
Is 450k after deductions, enough to live comfortably in a smaller city? Looking at an opportunity at an international school.
I feel like my office never gets warm. I am constantly cold in here.
On the other hand, I can make it a refrigerator in summer.
