I’m a South Asian bride-to-be living in Japan and planning to get married here soon. I’ve been running into a bit of a challenge finding a makeup artist who can truly do justice to South Asian features and skin tones.
Most of the artists I’ve come across are incredibly talented, but they specialize in soft, minimal Japanese bridal makeup. It’s beautiful, just not the vibe I’m going for. I’m looking for someone who understands deeper skin tones, undertones, and can enhance features without making me look pale or washed out.
On the other hand, the few South Asian/brown artists I’ve found here seem to lean heavily into older 2010s-style bridal glam (very heavy contour, overly matte full coverage, super sharp brows, etc.), which isn’t really my aesthetic either. I’m hoping to find someone with updated techniques who can tailor the look to the client rather than applying a one-size-fits-all bridal template.
Ideally, I’d love someone who:
• Is comfortable working with medium to deep skin tones
• Understands undertones and doesn’t default to lightening the base
• Has modern technique (skin-like base, intentional glow, refined contour, etc.)
• Can balance South Asian bridal elements with a contemporary finish
If anyone has recommendations in Japan (especially in Tokyo or Chiba), or even tips on how to find MUAs experienced with diverse clients, I’d really appreciate it!
