Japanese name

I’ll be moving to Japan in September to study in university and I’ve heard that sometimes if you have a long name it could be better to choose a similar-sounding name written in kanji to simplify bureaucracy.

Can someone confirm this?

My name is foreign and really hard to pronounce (some of my Japanese friends told me it can’t be transliterated without changing how it sounds).
