Living with partner under company lease in Japan – will this be an issue?

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some advice or experiences on this.

I’m being relocated for work and will live in a company-leased apartment. The company covers 60% of the rent, but their housing policy states that cohabitants are limited to legal spouse, married partner, family members, or dependents only.

I’m in a long-term relationship, but we’re a same-sex couple (LGBT), and same-sex marriage isn’t legally recognized here. Because of this, my partner is not allowed to be registered under the policy.

Realistically, I’m planning to live with my partner but not declare it to the company.

My questions:

• Do companies in Japan actually verify who lives in company-leased apartments?

• Is this something people get caught for?

• Is this considered a crime, or more of a policy violation?

• What are the real risks in practice?

I’m not trying to abuse the system — the policy just doesn’t reflect modern relationships or LGBT realities. Just trying to understand the actual risk vs fear.

Would appreciate any real experiences or advice. Thanks.
