US Expats – How do you do/get your taxes done?

I'm a US based CPA, pretty early into my accounting/tax career. I've been considering trying to get into the expat niche as it seems like something that there is probably a market for/will continue to be in demand in the future. I AM NOT looking for business… I don't have my own firm and am not experienced enough to offer services to begin with.

I'm just trying to get a rough gauge for what to expect before I dig into it more. If anyone can answer the following it would be helpful:

  1. How straightforward is your return typically? Are you usually just dealing with a W2 and maybe 1-2 other issues or do you have more going on?
  2. Do you pay someone to prepare your return or do you usually try to file yourself with turbotax etc? – If you pay someone, roughly how much does it cost?
  3. Any general thoughts/frustrations you have with the tax process as an expat, just curious to hear whatever people's experience has been.

Thanks!
