I am honestly so confused about the remote work information online. I have contacted the German consulate and they told me it is fine to work remotely from Japan on a tourist visit, since I am not paid in Japan.
The information on their website also states the same :
– German nationals as well as nationals from other countries and regions (▸ full list here) can enter Japan without a visa for short stays of up to 90 days.
This includes: touristic travel, business trips, attending a conference, visiting relatives/friends, remote work for an employer outside Japan, attending language schools, unpaid internships, unpaid research work, etc..
