hello! i’m an international student on my 6th month here in japan. i plan on staying permanently after graduation in 2 years.
at the moment, i am in a dorm/apartment under my school’s name, and unfortunately, they do not have wifi.
ever since i came here, i have been relying mostly on an old iphone to use for an unlimited data sim with gtn, then i tether/hotspot for my ipad, macbook, and another iphone. with the entire apartment complex not really provided with wifi, everyday i always have to fight for a good data signal because even my own room’s window is not enough, especially during peak hours.
i was wondering what would be the best solution to this? i don’t mind purchasing a router to plug in. but i also don’t mind using a pocket wifi. i just need something to use at home, because i can barely stream any shows, play any games, and when i need to download something, i usually just make use of my school’s wifi, but i’m not there for a full day anyways. i also need something solid since i want to spend time in the evening on video calls (viber, messenger, facetime, discord), and i’d like something steady if i ever apply to any online classes.
each month, i probably consume about 17-20gb of data, simply out of streaming limited shows or being on video calls with family during weekends, so i know it’ll cost more once i get back to gaming. (genshin, hsr, nintendo switch)
i don’t want anything that needs to be constructed or installed by someone else, because that would probably incur more fees for me.
i’m not very knowledgeable in this line of tech, and there are many options on the market. please let me know if you have any brands and plans to recommend as well, especially with my usage. thank you!
