Why do you study Japanese in the age of AI translation?

Recently I started wondering about something.

With AI translation and translation apps becoming very advanced, it feels like you can get by in many situations—like traveling or simple communication—just by using translation tools.

Because of that, I became curious about why people still choose to study Japanese.

Japanese is often considered a very difficult language for English speakers because of things like grammar and kanji. So I’m interested in what motivates people to learn it despite that.

For example, reasons like:

  • Wanting to understand Japanese culture, anime, or games
  • Wanting to live or work in Japan
  • Finding the language itself interesting
  • Learning it as a personal challenge

I’m sure there are many different reasons.

If you’re comfortable sharing, I’d love to hear why you decided to study Japanese.

I’m not trying to make fun of anyone or criticize—I'm genuinely curious about people’s motivations. 😊
