Ikishaki or Naha

Hello, I'm planning my first trip to Japan. I'm leaving for a month, OCT/NOV. I do 5 days Tokyo, then 4 days Japanese Alps (Takayama), then 6 days Kyoto, then 3 days Osaka, and from there I want to go to Okinawa: from octubre 23 to October 28.

My conflict begins in this part of the trip since I don't know which island to decide, I had thought of going to Naha and from there taking ferries to the different islands with blue water and paradisiacal beaches, but now I'm in doubt what to do afterwards, since depending on the ferries can be exhausting and it won't give me the feeling of resting on a paradise island. I also thought about flying to Naha, and from there taking a ferry to spend 3 nights to Tokashiki or Zamami, and then returning for the last two nights in Naha.

The other option is to take a flight to Ishigaki and spend the 5 days there without having to move…. I don't know what to do I need someone who has gone or lived to give me information.

Facts to keep in mind: we are a couple and neither of us knows how to drive, we really like being on the beach, sunbathing and swimming, we are not interested in nightlife but we are interested in going out to eat.

I'm afraid of the weather issue, although I would go approximately on finish October (from what I read it's a good time), it makes me doubt if we go to an island like Ishigaki, and it rains, there is not much to do, something that would not happen in Naha since it is more city.

I don't know what to do, help me local people 😭

  1. Ishigaki would be a bit warmer (one or two degrees Celsius), and if the purpose is to unwind and relax then this is the place to be. In Naha, too many tourists. If you try to move away from there, just too many Chinese in rental cars not knowing how to drive.

  2. Subjective, so just my opinion…

After you’ve been to Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Naha won’t hold much for you.

If you want to end the trip relaxing on the beach, Ishigaki is going to be a lot more accessible than uncrowded, wild beaches of the main island, which pretty much require a car to get you north.

What if it rains, or there’s a typhoon? I’d rather be stuck in a hotel room on Ishigaki than Naha.

Ferry to the Keramas out of Naha? Sure, but it’s proximity and access make it touristy, and the culture there has adapted…

  3. I‘ve been to ishigaki in September and it was the best decision. You can see a lot of beautiful beaches and its really calm there. We loved the food there and you can do things from ishigaki too. We went to the monkey village and taketomi island with the ferry and we loved the central market – also one time it rained but we were able to make a glass boat tour. Driving in ishigaki is really easy, you might be the only one on the street most of the time, but if you are sure about not driving ishigaki is not for you. My boyfriend has been to Mauritius before and he said Ishigaki is more beautiful so pls goooo
